Does ADHD disqualify you from the draft?
The U.S. Army website, for example, currently states that ADHD “will only prevent you from joining the Army if you've been treated with ADD/ADHD medication within the last year, or if you display obvious signs of the condition.” Similar guidance appears in the Navy's website.
However, because ADHD is not disqualifying per se, individuals who want to serve in the military are encouraged to pursue this option, along with other career possibilities.
Certain elected officials, exempt so long as they continue to hold office. Veterans, generally exempt from service in peacetime draft. Immigrants and dual nationals in some cases may be exempt from U.S. military service depending upon their place of residence and country of citizenship.
You should be able to. There's plenty of Law Enforcement agents with past psychological issues, many of them are former military or former security personnel who get hired without question. So if documentation on prior jobs before L.E is good, there probably won't be much issue.
- Manifest imbecility.
- Insanity. ...
- Epilepsy. ...
- Paralysis, general or of one limb, or chorea; their existence to be adequately determined.
While an ADHD diagnosis can be a barrier to someone trying to enlist in the military, it does not automatically disqualify someone from applying, especially if they can demonstrate that they do not require medication or accommodations.
The military ADHD policy 2023 does not just ban all applicants that have ADHD. The policy is more detailed and only restricts people that are dependent on medication or whose performance suffers directly from the condition. In this way, you can still join the military if you've been diagnosed with ADHD in the past.
- Any disorder or history of disorders with psychotic features.
- History of impulse control and conduct disorders.
- History of depression requiring medication, outpatient treatment or hospitalization.
- History of anxiety requiring medication, outpatient treatment or hospitalization.
But that doesn't mean you won't have problems. If you fail to register for the draft by the time you turn 26, you are no longer able to do so. Then, if you apply for any government benefits at any time after that, you quite possibly will be denied. No student aid, government job, etc.
Claiming conscientious objector status on the basis of sincerely held religious or ethical beliefs. Claiming a student deferment, when one is in school primarily in order to study and learn. Claiming a medical or psychological problem, if the purported health issue is genuine and serious.
Does ADHD count as a disability?
Yes, it's considered a formal disability under different acts and organizations. The accommodations you can receive may change depending on your condition and how it impacts your life. To qualify for disability benefits under the ADA, your ability to work or learn at school must be impaired from living with ADHD.
What Is ADHD? Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disability condition that is characterized by excessive impulsivity and hyperactivity. Those with ADHD may also have problems focusing on particular tasks or exhibit high inattention levels as well.
Those medically diagnosed with asthma or who have been prescribed Ritalin or any other medication for ADD and/or ADHD at any point in their life may be precluded from military service, but this may be waived, depending on diagnosis and treatment.
While ADHD alone does not disqualify a person from military service, the Department of Defense (DOD) places significant enlistment restrictions on individuals with an ADHD diagnosis and/or prior treatment with medication. Has documentation of adverse academic, occupational, or work performance.
Mood Disorders
You're also disqualified if you have bipolar disorder or affective psychoses. For depressive disorders (for example, major depressive disorder), disqualification from the service occurs if a person had outpatient care that lasted for more than 12 months or any inpatient care.
In the event of a major conflict and a military draft is reinstated, an individual with autism may be drafted to serve. However, they would still need to pass physical and mental tests. Those with moderate-to-severe autism would typically have difficulty passing these tests.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
An individual with ongoing ADHD will not (by definition) be able to complete pilot training. Medication used for this disorder is normally disqualifying.
Disqualifications at MEPS can include illegal drug use, alcohol dependence, not meeting the height/weight requirements, having certain contagious diseases, and more. Law violations can also prevent you from enlisting, such as being convicted of a crime that prohibits you from carrying a firearm.
I am aware you cannot join the military with ADHD/ADD, unless you have a med waver.
Military entrance stations conducted 215,000 medical exams in fiscal 2022, which ended Sept. 30, according to the Defense Department. Of all applicants, nearly 30% are disqualified during the exam.
Which branch gives the most waivers?
Different branches have different personnel needs and may approve of your waiver. In general, the Army has the reputation of approving the most moral waivers, while the Air Force and Coast Guard approve the fewest. The Navy and the Marines fall somewhere in the middle. However, this is not always the case.
Disqualifying Criterion
The DoD fitness standards exclude any individuals who have a history of anxiety disorders.
The U.S. Army website, for example, currently states that ADHD “will only prevent you from joining the Army if you've been treated with ADD/ADHD medication within the last year, or if you display obvious signs of the condition.” Similar guidance appears in the Navy's website.
No. Being disqualified from the US Military because of mental health issues usually requires a diagnosis of a mental health disorder from a psychiatrist. Usually individuals will be disqualified if they suffer from a disease or disorder that does not have a cure and can only be managed through medication.
Contrary to what some people think, enlisting is not simply a matter of signing papers at an eager recruiter's office. Your physical and mental health will be carefully evaluated. The Army may check medical records if there are red flags about the recruit's fitness for duty.
